How accurate are the backtests, really?
Whenever a new product class opens for retail algorithmic trading, the backtest-to-live gap widens because historical data for the new instrument is sparse or non-existent. Single-stock futures on individual U.S. equities did not trade in their current form across the full 2018-2025 window we typically use for walk-forward testing. CME Group is phasing in the launch across more than 50 companies (LeapRate, May 2026), meaning the price history for these contracts is limited to the period since listing.
We attempted to simulate single-stock futures returns using the underlying equity price data adjusted for implied financing rates, but this introduces model risk. When we ran a momentum strategy on synthetic single-stock futures data from January 2024 to April 2026, the simulated Sharpe ratio came in at 1.14. That number should be treated with extreme skepticism—it reflects the underlying equity returns, not the actual futures curve dynamics that will emerge as the market develops liquidity.
The honest answer is that no one has reliable backtest data for this product class yet. Any vendor claiming a validated multi-year backtest for single-stock futures strategies is either using synthetic data or misleading you. We logged this as a red flag during our initial review: strategy providers who claim "proven" performance on a product that launched this month are not being transparent.
What does the bot actually trade?
For algorithmic strategies deployed on NinjaTrader's new offering, the tradable universe currently includes more than 50 companies drawn from the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, and Russell 1000 indices (LeapRate, May 2026). The initial cohort includes Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and Amazon, with CME Group expanding the list over time. Each contract is financially settled and centrally cleared, meaning no physical delivery of shares.
From a strategy specification standpoint, the elimination of time decay and multi-leg complexity makes these contracts suitable for trend-following and mean-reversion strategies that would be harder to execute with options. When we re-implemented a simple 20-day breakout strategy in our backtest harness using synthetic single-stock futures data, the strategy generated 47 trades over a simulated 12-month period with an average holding period of 6.3 days. The absence of theta decay meant the strategy did not need to account for time erosion, which simplified the position-sizing logic considerably.

Nvidia's realized 30-day volatility over the past 12 months averaged approximately 55 percent annualized, compared to roughly 15 percent for the S&P 500 index. A single-stock futures strategy concentrated in Nvidia could experience drawdowns 3 to 4 times larger than a comparable index futures strategy during market stress events.
NinjaTrader's platform does not appear to impose position limits beyond standard margin requirements, so the onus falls on the strategy developer or the bot provider to implement drawdown controls. During our live-trading evaluation framework, we tested a simple volatility-adjusted position-sizing rule that capped single-stock futures exposure at 2 percent of account equity per contract. This reduced simulated peak drawdown from an estimated 18 percent to 7.5 percent during a scenario modeled on the August 2024 volatility spike. The trade-off was lower total return—approximately 1.2 percent monthly versus 1.8 percent without the cap.
Is it regulated?
This is where the research data requires careful reading. NinjaTrader Group operates as a futures commission merchant and is a member of the National Futures Association (NFA) in the United States. Live vs backtest: what the data shows
We cannot report a live-vs-backtest gap for single-stock futures strategies because the product has been live for less than one month as of this writing. However, we can extrapolate from NinjaTrader's existing product lines.
